30/01/2006: Janssen Pharmaceutica Finalist in Facility of the Year Competition - 2006

Jan. 30, 2006 – The Small Volume Area installation of Janssen Pharmaceutica, Geel placed among the five finalists for the Facility of the Year award, organized by ISPE, INTERPHEX and Pharmaceutical Processing. This annual worldwide competition for pharmaceutical companies honors projects that make use of innovative technologies. The winner of this prestigious accolade will be announced on March 23.

Janssen Pharmaceutica, Geel plays a crucial role within Johnson & Johnson in the production of medically active substances. About two-thirds of the worldwide chemical production in the pharmaceutical sector is carried out by the Chemical Production group in Geel. Johnson & Johnson is the fourth largest pharmaceutical company in the world.

In the Small Volume Area (SVA) installation the highly active powders are ground and sieved to the desired granule size (in some cases down to 0.002 mm). That is done in a completely closed-off installation. The combination of the state-of-the-art grinding installation and the hi-tech separation by means of glove compartments (otherwise known as isolators) adds up to uniqueness on a world scale.

Together with three other production installations, the SVA forms part of the High Containment Production Chain. This chain of four separate hi-tech installations was inaugurated on June 20, 2005 in the presence of Marc Verwilghen, Minister for Economy, Energy, Foreign Trade and Science Policy. Owing to the so-called containment technology that they use, each of these installations is totally sealed off, which confers substantial advantages as far as quality and safety are concerned.
