Last year, Janssen Pharmaceutica opened
a new research center, the Dr. Paul Janssen
Research Center, a project costing 68 million
euros and providing accommodation for 300
investigators. This building is the latest
realization in a package of approximately
200 million euros worth of capital expenditure
on five new research buildings in the last
three years and marks the definitive establishment
of basic drug research by Johnson & Johnson
in Belgium. The research division was
internationally integrated a few years ago
under the name Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical
Research & Development. The Belgian
branch is a division of Janssen Pharmaceutica
and is led by
Dr. Didier de Chaffoy. Today the research division in Beerse numbers 1400 employees.
Today, thanks in part to the steady growth
and innovatory medicines of Janssen Pharmaceutica,
the Pharmaceutical Group of Johnson & Johnson
is the fourth biggest drug company in the
world. The trading results of Janssen are
traditionally excellent. In 2003, sales totaled
1876 million euros, while the net profit
amounted to 355 million euros. The workforce
numbered 4386 employees, and spending on
Research & Development came to 868 million
euros. Meanwhile, the research pipeline is
filled with substances for treating cancer,
central nervous system disorders, tuberculosis,
internal diseases and pain treatment. It
should also be mentioned that Janssen has
a tradition of sustainable enterprise, a
field in which it plays a pioneering role.
Last year, for the first time, the firm presented a Sustainability
Report.
