05/11/2003: The Plant and Material Protection Division of Janssen Pharmaceutica and Nongda develop in China sign production contract

Antwerp, November 5, 2003 – In the framework of the renewal of the cooperation agreement between the province of Antwerp and the province of Shaanxi, China, the Plant and Material Protection division of Janssen Pharmaceutica has signed a manufacturing and supply agreement with Nongda Develop Science & Technology Company in China.

Effective and Environment-Friendly
The subject of the contract is the production of active molecules for the control of unwanted growth of marine organisms of plant or animal origin. These organisms are a heavy burden for boats, fish nets and underwater constructions, causing higher fuel consumption, increasing corrosion or shortening their service life. The new molecules from Janssen Pharmaceutica act as anti-fouling agents and will do so in an environmentally friendlier way than existing products since the current alternatives, which are based on heavy metals, like tin, copper which might accumulate in nature resulting in negative effects on the organisms in their natural habitat.

Production and Sales through the Chinese Partner
The worldwide production of the new molecules will be fully in the hands of Nongda Develop, which will also be in charge of sales on the Chinese market. Outside China, Janssen Pharmaceutica will market the molecules through licensees and distributors. Nongda Develop is already a customer of Janssen Pharmaceutica and processes the existing antifungal molecules in crop protectants. Nongda Develop meets all the requirements with reference to quality, volumes and cost price. Most potential customers for the product are based in Asia.

Small Quantities, High Added Value
The molecules of the Plant and Material Protection division of Janssen Pharmaceutica are produced in small quantities for processing in products by third parties, such as paint manufacturers. Coating the hull of a ship, for example, with the right agents can achieve a fuel reduction of 10% which results also in a significant reduction of harmful exhaust gases.

The Plant and Material Protection Division
The Plant and Material Protection division of Janssen Pharmaceutica specializes in the discovery and development of molecules for the protection of agricultural products, such as seed, plants and their produce, and materials, such as wood, textiles, paint and coatings, against damage caused by fungi, bacteria, algae, insects and bio-contaminants. One of the principles applied in selecting a molecule for further development is that the environmental impact of new biocidal elements must be minimal. This criterion is consistent with the overall strategy of sustainable development practiced by the Plant and Material Protection division of Janssen Pharmaceutica.
