Energy
week
With the organization of Energy Week,
the company wishes not only to inform
its staff members of the environmental
improvements that have already been
made, but also to make them aware of
the efforts that every one of them can
still make. That is why the following
initiatives were taken:
| - |
information stands with tips
on ways of saving energy at home; |
| - |
a guided tour of the energy
installations; |
| - |
a drawing contest for the children
of staff members; |
| - |
information on the Intranet
(liberalization of the energy
market, grants and subsidies,
etc); |
| - |
staff members were again reminded
that ideas and tips on saving
energy are always welcome. |
Energy-Saving Efforts
Janssen Pharmaceutica highlighted
two cornerstones of its energy policy
during this special week: reductions
in energy and water
consumption.
The main source of energy used is
natural gas, which serves to generate
hot water, steam and electricity.
The combustion gases are passed through
heat exchangers in the chimney and
reused in order to reduce gas consumption
and CO2
emissions. An additional treatment
of the feed water will realize additional
savings. This idea is currently in
the design stage and will be put into
operation this month at the Geel site
and in 2004 at the Beerse site. The project
will reduce emissions by 2500
tons yearly!
| Other Initiatives |
| - |
construction and putting
into service of new, highly
energy-efficient cooling
units; |
| - |
replacement of a number
of air compressors by more
efficient high-output compressors; |
| - |
centralization and optimization
of cooling water systems.
|
|
The past year, our energy-saving
efforts resulted in a saving of 1.6
million KWh electricity and 1.8 million
KWh natural gas!
Our water consumption
was reduced by process improvements
and reusing water.
This year these systems brought about
a reduction in water consumption in
Beerse of 150,000 m³, and by
next year this figure should increase
to 210,000m³. In Geel we are
examining whether
water from the Albert Canal can be
purified for use
in processes that are not quality-critical.
This project will halve the consumption
of mains water, which means a reduction
of 250,000m³.
The new buildings will meet all expectations
as far as energy-saving is concerned.
