| Modern medicines
not only have to be efficacious and safe.
They must also be able to be given in the
right form according to the type of illness
and the patient. A tablet can be made in such
a way that it instantly dissolves in the mouth,
or only after a quarter of an hour, when it
has already passed through the stomach. The
Pharmaceutical Development department has
already developed its own technology to promote
the solubility of medicines and their gradual
release into the bloodstream. This technology
increases therapeutic compliance, the efficacy
of the treatment and reduces the risk of side-effects. |

The new building has
a surface area of almost 9,000 m2
and meets the strictest safety and
environmental standards. In this way,
the workers are fully protected against
the active ingredients, and all solvents
used are fully recuperated.
Fifty people work in the building.

The building
will be used by a worldwide Center of Excellence
within the Johnson & Johnson group,
to which Janssen Pharmaceutica belongs.
This means that every new medicine that
is developed within Johnson & Johnson
must first go through Beerse. A small production
unit in the same building makes the necessary
quantities of medicines for worldwide clinical
trials.
The official opening ceremony was concluded
with an extensive tour of the new department.
