Our commitment
to women's health
Janssen-Cilag offers one of
the most comprehensive product lines
of oral contraceptives and other women's
healthcare products available worldwide,
including treatment for vaginal infections
and menopause.
Vaginal
infections
Candidosis is by far the most
frequent of all forms of vaginal infections
and Candida albicans is the
most common yeast species involved.
Sometimes other members of the genus
cause infections. It is important
that the correct diagnosis is made
to distinguish Candida infections
from other causes of vaginitis.
In 1967 Janssen researchers synthesised
GYNO-DAKTARIN™ (miconazole
nitrate), a broad-spectrum antimycotic.
It provides rapid relief of symptoms.
Janssen-Cilag's more recent discovery,
SPORANOX™ (itraconazole)
has been developed as an oral broad-spectrum
antifungal agent when oral treatment
is more appropriate than topical treatment.
Reproductive
health
Janssen-Cilag has a long-standing
tradition in the field of reproductive
health. Among other products, our
RWJPRI researchers have developed
the oral contraceptives CILEST™,
OVYSMEN™, and TRINOVUM™.
The active substances in these products
inhibit the release of natural hormones
by the ovaries, thereby preventing
ovulation. Oral contraceptives are
probably one of the most extensively
studied medications in history. Twenty
years of research has brought safer
pills and a long list of guidelines
to help doctors screen out women most
likely to develop serious complications.
Menopause
Menopause is an event common
to all women, yet it is a highly individualised
experience. Some women notice little
difference in their bodies or moods,
while others find the change extremely
bothersome and disruptive. Menopausal
research has been going on for at
least 20 years, although progress
has been substantial in the more recent
years. Several large studies are currently
attempting to resolve the remaining
questions about the menopause and
its biology, although it will take
several more years to reach any definitive
answers.
RWJPRI scientists have developed
an impressive track record of pioneering
innovative products for treating the
undesirable effects of menopause.
Our most widely used product in this
field is SYSTEN™ (oestradiol),
also known as EVOREL™ or
EVOPAD™, a so-called hormone
replacement therapy (HRT). SYSTEN™
comes as a patch, which is simply
stuck onto the skin. New HRT treatments
are being developed, including SYSTEN
CONTI™ and SYSTEN SEQUI™.
Hormone replacement therapy is designed
to bring back the natural level of
sex hormones, which the body itself
no longer produces, to that of before
the menopause, thereby relieving the
typical symptoms of the menopause.
In addition, oestrogen therapy has
a natural slowing effect on bone loss.
