<About
Janssen / Production>
|
|
 |
| In almost no other industry are the
products and production processes subjected to such
thorough checks as in the pharmaceutical industry.
The ultimate goal of all this effort is the manufacture
of pure and safe drugs, which each and every patient
is entitled to expect.
To satisfy such stringent criteria, Janssen-Cilag
is committed to permanent effort and substantial
investments in manpower and equipment for its
chemical and pharmaceutical production facilities.

Chemical production |
 |
| The development of a new compound
in the laboratory is one thing – large-scale production
is something else. The chemical production departments
have to find a safe and economically viable method
of producing the drug in large quantities, while
still maintaining the high quality of the product. |
| |
 |
 |
Once drugs could be made in
just a few steps. Now, often 15 to 20 different
intermediate steps in the chemical chain are
needed to achieve the end product. At every
stage of the chemical production process,
concern for safety and the environment is
just as evident as the painstaking care which
is given to quality assurance. |
|
As far as is possible solvents are
recycled within the company. All gas emissions are
scrubbed and cleaned in an active carbon filter,
and waste effluent is treated in ultramodern water
treatment plants.
One of Janssen-Cilag's largest production units
for the manufacture of active chemical ingredients
is located in Geel, Belgium. Its fourth plant, an
ultramodern facility, was opened in 1995. Janssen-Cilag
also has chemical plants in other countries, including
the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and the USA.

| Pharmaceutical
production |
 |
| Using the raw materials and basic
ingredients produced in the chemical plants, our
pharmaceutical production departments manufacture
the drugs in their ultimate form – tablets, suppositories,
drops, ointments, powders, ampoules, etc. – and
pack them in strips, boxes, tubes, bottles and numerous
other containers. To illustrate the magnitude and
complexity of these operations: our Belgian plant
produces over 300 dosage forms and 1700 packaging
forms, with over 500 dedicated staff members; our
factory in Gurabo has the capacity to produce 2
billion tablets or 30 million US packs per year.
|
| |
 |
 |
Our five European pharmaceutical production
plants work closely together and are located
in Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland and
Portugal. The North American market gets
supplied by a plant situated in Gurabo,
Puerto Rico.

The China connection
With the aid of our technology, a chemical plant
producing mebendazole was established in the interior
of China in 1983. It was the first chemical plant
to be established with foreign aid in the post-Mao
era, and was the prototype for further technology
transfer projects.
More importantly, the success of the chemical
plant provided the impetus for a much more ambitious
project. In 1985, following years of exploration
and negotiations, a joint venture was established
between our company and four Chinese state organizations.
On 3 June 1986 in Xian, the first stone of a
vast factory with a floor area of 35,000 m2
was laid. Our first products came off the production
line in March 1989 and the factory now manufactures
more than 100 million packs of nine Janssen-Cilag
drugs in 18 different forms.
Currently, Xian-Janssen is not only the largest
pharmaceutical joint venture in China but also
one of the most modern pharmaceutical plants in
the world. An independent panel has so far awarded
the Xian-Janssen joint venture the 'best joint
venture in China' prize three times.
